Stop using Meta

It should be obvious why you should not use any Meta products. Thus!:
- No WhatsApp
- No Facebook
- No Instagram

Take care of your freedom. Choose applications that won't limit your options. Don't get locked in. Make sure your apps are compatible with Linux. Then, consider versions of the apps for macOS, iOS, Windows, or Android. Remember that Windows is incompatible with all the others in one key area: its file system. One should realize that, except for Windows, most operating systems are of the Unix family. You don't need Microsoft; Microsoft needs you.
Use software what uses Open File Formats, Proprietary file format's will lock you in.
For example, PSD locks you into Adobe Photoshop. XCF (GIMP’s native format) and ORA (OpenRaster) are the best open-source alternatives to .PSD for preserving layers, masks, and editable text. Unlike the proprietary .PSD format, these formats are fully documented and supported by free, open-source software like GIMP and Krita without requiring reverse engineering.

Microblogging
Mastodon is a microblogging platform. With it, you can join groups and communicate with their members. You can also communicate with users from other groups. This concept is referred to as "federation" in the IT world. Just like email, federation allows you to communicate with other domains. However, from a user's perspective, recognizing publishers for microblogging can be confusing. This is the main reason why Mastodon is not gaining momentum. (BlueSky is from the USA)
For now, we don't know of any user friendly alternative to BlueSky and -X-.



Youtube
Spotify is becoming an increasingly viable alternative to YouTube. We hope that Spotify will integrate with Mastodon so that we can have conversations with creators. This would make Spotify more social than YouTube. However, Spotify is doing a poor job of being a movie/film platform in addition to being an audio platform for music and podcasts. The movie selection for users is substandard.

Movies
Where to watch movies online on an account + pay per view basis. Not only USA movies but from all over the world?
We desperately need a platform to watch online movies from everywhere based on pay per view. For validating the account authenticity, an annual fee is obviously needed. Then, you should pay per time you watch the movie. For Netherlands there is Pathé-Thuis.
The real issue here is Digital Rights Management. DRM is currently all based on Widevine from Google.


Office apps
LibreOffice is already for decades the best Office suite. LibreOffice is moving to an hybrid architecture that will make working together on documents via cloud storage as easy as with Google WorkSpace. And you can better work together via a hybrid-cloud than in the cloud because that enables you to protect your privacy.



eMail
We think that for now, proton.me is the best and most private alternative for gmail.



Cloud storage
We think that for now, pCloud is the best and most private alternative for Google Drive; Dropbox; OneCloud and Windows 365. Proton.me also includes cloud services.



Break out of the Microsoft prison & Apple prison
Microsoft is a smart marketing and cashflow piping company, not really the source of innovation. There are alternatives already for years for all Microsoft products, mostly technical superior. There has never been a better marketing than the Microsoft one however.
The best escape from Windows is ZorinOS.

We think that DeepL is the best alternative for Google Translate.

Maps (Google / Apple)
An increasingly popular alternative is the data from OpenStreetMap and one of the apps that use this geodata, such as OsmAnd. Other alternatives are often still based on Google Maps.
Governments should integrate their GEO-data with OpenStreetMap so ti will become the moet reliable maintained GEO-data platform, not owned by a company.

Although the World Wide Web (WWW) originated in Europe at CERN, browser software is primarily an American creation. We recommend Vivaldi, which is from Norway. We hope that a non-Chrome engine-based alternative will be available in the future. There is the Ladybird Project. We should all sponsor it where possible.
